In the city’s historic tradition of championing its heritage with epic battle reenactments, the annual return of Trenton’s dueling Pork Roll Festivals takes center stage this holiday weekend. This period marks a shift from fixed, stable Taurus to flighty, yet adaptable Gemini, a mutable air sign immortalized in the night sky by the twin stars Castor and Pollux, the mythical sons of Leda. Hatched from swan’s eggs, these devoted brothers were hunters, athletes, horsemen and Argonauts – patron saints to countless sailors and travelers who found safe passage by following their brilliant constellation. But, driven by revenge over the unfair distribution of cattle, the “Dioscuri” also used poor judgement in order to settle a score against their cousins, who had taken advantage of what was supposed to be an equitable business arrangement. This caused them to leave their cousin Helen unattended with love-struck Paris, the Prince of Troy, who kidnapped her and ignited the Trojan War. As we take time to honor the soldiers who have fallen this Memorial Day weekend, perhaps this cosmic backdrop will remind us to remember our commitment to valor over vengeance when it comes to matters of grilled meat, golden apples and governance.
